retire

In recent months the issue of the appropriate retirement age has attracted a lot of debate. On our show we attracted some interesting calls after we mentioned that perhaps it was a good time to review  what is an appropriate time in your life to quit the workplace. There really is no answer because each persons situation is different for a variety of reasons. The issue revolves around the fact that the retirement age was determined many years ago when our age expectancy and lifestyle is very different today.

One of the key points in this debate as pointed out by one of our listeners is what type of occupation you are in for instance an office worker could physically be more capable of working longer than a manual worker such as a bricklayer or concreter. Another question that the debate raises is should the retirement age be the same for men and women.

  • Retirement should be an individual choice, if you are capable. I am female aged 64, work in manufacturing and have no intention of leaving the workforce ( they can take me out feet first) Quite frankly, I dont know how to go about retiring??? Scary thought
