What we're talking about

ANZAC DAY... A salute to our heroes

Posted by: Radio 4BH | 20 March, 2009 - 6:24 PM

ANZAC Day... the words so powerful in the Australian vocabulary, they can bring a tear to the eye, a lump to the throat and a feeling of  Australian pride. Words that bring to mind those other unique Australian words that bore their origin in the trenches of Gallipoli in 1915 - 'Cobber', 'Digger', 'Fair Dinkum', 'True Blue', 'Mate'.

As ANZAC Day approaches, we remember these courageous Aussie men and women who took part in various conflicts throughout the twentieth century, right through to the present day.

To commemorate our heroes, 4BH encourages you to share your ANZAC Day story, dedicate a message to these special Australians (both fallen and serving), post your personal memory or more... What it means to you to be a proud Australian!

Supported by VB, the Raise A Glass Appeal will aim to raise more than a million dollars to support Australian serving and ex-service men and women, and their families. The Raise A Glass Appeal begins this April, raising money and awareness for the RSL and Legacy's welfare programs.

For more information please visit www.raiseaglass.com.au

100% of the money raised will be distributed between the RSL and Legacy.VB will contribute $1 from VB cartons sold throughout April to the Raise A Glass Appeal and more than 1,500 kegs to pubs around Australia for Anzac Day celebrations, with the proceeds from the sale of these kegs also contributed.

  • I deeply appreciate Aussie's sacrifice and dedication for freedom of my country Republic of Korea as well as peace of the world.
Also, I feel lots of gratitude to 4BH. I came to know the radio station when I stayed in Australia about 10 years ago. But, I'm still listening In Korea through its' website. As an English teacher, I'm sure that your website is great help for students' listening ability.
I feel a lump in my throat whenever 'ANZAC DAY' comes to my mind. I believe the current prosperity of Korea is due to the noble devotion, blood and pain of Aussie soldiers who fought against the Communists during Korean War.
    Ance again, Many thsnks indeed!!!
My memories about Australia will last forever!!

  • My dear Aussie people,
I live in Prishtina,Kosovo, far from Australia, but regular listener of your radio, I love it and tonight I am listening songs dedicated to fallen soldiers from WWI. I salute all fallen soldiers and I like to thank AUS and NZ for changing the world and for helping others in the most difficult times.A big salute to all Aussie heroes from Kosovo.

  • Anzac Day means I can have freedom to work in most jobs I can do, live where I want and travel between states when I want. I can go overseas without restriction, I can voice my opinion without fear and even when I'm wrong. Thank You Anzacs, such freedom is only possible because of you.

  • When I was a child the family always went to the Dawn Service in Brisbane and Dad would march. Brings goosebumps just remembering the rat-a-tat-tat of the drums as they echoed though th city - whilst that still occurs now much of the sound is absorbed by the buildings. That first service of the day is extra special - eerie silence - beautiful.

  • Anzac Day means that I publicly show my deep appreciation for what my ancestors and my father sacrificed so that I may live a life of freedom.
I had two uncles and two step great uncles who served in WWI. One uncle and one step-uncle came back home.
My father fought in WWII as a member of 2/26 Battalion. I know the after effects imprisonment had on him after the war. I also have the great fortune to have known a great many members of the 2/26Bn, some of whom are no longer with us.
Not many of the 2/26 Bn are still alive, and a number of those who are still suffered the effects of their ill treatment by the Japanese.
I love and respect all these men and every day I appreciate all they sacrificed for me, but on ANZAC Day, I physically show this love my participating in the Brisbane Anzac Day march.
All Auzzie men who fought in any War, placed their lives on the line, for us. The least we can do is show that we appreciate their sacrifices. Show your appreciation by attending your local ANZAC Day Service or march, better yet- participate.
